I’d like to preface this review with the warning that I finished the book several months ago but kept on pushing back on writing this review.
First things first, I thought the book was good. Very good in fact. The entire read up until the rescue of John Galt was basically captivating. The rescue however, couldn’t have felt more out of place. The ending felt like a shitty action movie you forget about the moment it is done except I still remember it sadly.
So what did I like about it?#
It felt inspiring. Dagny was a hard working (, semi autistic) and enjoyed her work. She doesn’t care about the money not in a monetarily way at least. She cared about quality, efficiency , and honesty. She described the shine I see in people their eye when they are being true and astute.
I liked how hard working was portrayed. This portrayal felt idealistic and gorgeous. It showed how this kind of work can generate trust even among people who are strangers.
I liked Hank because he sucked at being social but could still function in society. He created something that helped the world and he did it basically with his own mind.
What did I not like?#
John Galt.
It was cool at the beginning but slowly became repetitive. He could do any profession, was like 200 IQ, and incredibly charming. The actual physical embodiment of capitalism and the prime example of a red blooded American. Capitalist Christ.
Also I didn’t like how any type of charity was swept under the same rug as the worst thing to do if someone is in need. Everything had to be a paid service of some kind. Even helping a friend out before they would die.
